Pope Francis in his message for Lent 2017 said: “Lazarus teaches us that other persons are a gift. A right relationship with people consists in gratefully recognizing their value. Even the poor person at the door of the rich is not a nuisance, but a summons to conversion and to change. The parable [of the rich man and Lazarus] first invites us to open the doors of our heart to others because each person is a gift, whether it be our neighbor or an anonymous pauper.

This week we will read "I Could Do That" which is a biographical account of the life of Esther Hobart Morris (August 8, 1814 – April 3, 1902), a New York native, who distinguished herself as the first female Justice of the Peace in the United States.
This selection is paired with the informational text "The Role of the Constitution" which explains how the constitution sets up the national government.
