Music

Grades 7 & 8 have been singing Songs of Freedom and recognizing the functions of these songs as an expression of patriotic values and sentiments. Students are exploring the musical elements of American patriotic music and forming small groups to perform their own musical selection. The students have also learned "The Presidents Rap" and are creating new verses for their class performance. Students will decide which instruments and movements they will add to enhance their performance.

Grade 6 has entered the world of opera. Students are studying a famous children's opera, "Amahl and the Night Visitors" by Gian Carlo Menotti. The class is following the libretto for this opera, which was written in English. Class discussions, in regard to costumes and scenery, as well as vocal range and endurance of the singers have been of particular interest to the students. Famous opera houses, such as the Metropolitan Opera House, la Scala in Milan, Covent Gardens in London and the Paris Opera House have been included.

Grade 5 has been studying famous American Work Songs that were sung during the building of our country in the nineteenth century. Students are comparing various songs brought to us by the immigrants and songs that were created from their daily work. Such folk heroes as John Henry and Casey Jones are expressed in the music and students are creating new ways to perform this music.

Grade 4 has been learning new notes on the recorder and students are working diligently to earn their yellow and orange tassels. Students have become much more proficient in reading musical notation as well improving their tone quality. The students are working in small groups to bring their songs into full bloom.

Grades 1, 2 and 3 are discovering new ways that people celebrate holidays such as Chinese New Year and St.  Patrick's Day. Students are learning songs for these holidays and are choosing various percussion instruments to enhance their classroom performance. The classes are experimenting with these instruments, as well as scarves, a class dragon and dance movements.

Grade K has been singing songs about different animals and creating rhythm patterns with the animal names. The class has created fun movements for the "Five Puppies" and "The Old Gray Cat". Children are also learning and having fun with various percussion instruments such as tambourines, cabeza, bells, maracas, drums and finger cymbals. Every child has the opportunity to experiment with the different sounds.
